It was 15 years ago that I was raped. Today, is my rape anniversary.

Rape anniversaries suck!

It seems too simple to put into one word, but the truth is… they SUCK!

You may dread the weeks and days leading up to it on a calendar because you know it is a time in your life that you cannot forget. A time in your life when something happened to you that you did not want. Something that you did not have power and control over. Something that is NOT all of who you are, but a piece of who you are.

It may seem funny to call the day you were raped an anniversary, but it is. It may not be a day that you celebrate with a party and gifts but it is a day that you look back on. Whether you remember every detail of what happened to you or your subconscious has chosen to not have you remember all of it, you still know it happened.

For some reason, society thinks people should not talk about rape anniversaries. But the truth is, it happened, and we have the right to express how we are feeling, to talk about what happened to us, and what was taken away that we will never get back.

Dealing with your rape anniversary will look different for everyone and every year it may look different to you. Whether choose to sleep the day away, not go to work, watch mindless tv, or whether you get up and go, go for a drive that lasts all day, or go to a beach that is far away.

You deal with it in your own way, and there is no wrong way. Just remember at the end of the day whether you call yourself a victim, a survivor, or a warrior it was not your fault, I believe you, and you are not alone!
